William II of the Netherlands was the Dutch monarch from 1840 to 1849 and also held the duchies of Luxembourg and Limburg. The eldest son of William I and Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia, he first distinguished himself in a military career: he served as an aide‑de‑camp to Wellington and fought in the Peninsular campaigns, taking part in the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, where he was wounded. His military performance has drawn divergent assessments over time, attracting both criticism and defense from historians. As king, William II acceded to the throne after his father’s abdication in 1840. His reign saw a major political transformation: in 1848 a new constitution was adopted that brought the Netherlands into parliamentary democracy, the central element of his institutional legacy. Married to Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia, he had five children, including his successor William III. Educated at European courts—he lived in Berlin and studied at Oxford—and known for personal popularity with troops and the public, he remains a significant figure in the liberal transition of nineteenth‑century Dutch history.
