Proclus of Lycia was one of the most important Neoplatonic philosophers of the fifth century, recognized as the head of the Platonic tradition that succeeded Plotinus, Porphyry, and Iamblichus. Educated in Alexandria and influenced by teachers such as Olympiodorus, he became known both as a commentator on Plato’s dialogues — including the Republic, Timaeus, and Parmenides — and as a systematizer of Platonic theological doctrines.
His output falls into philosophical commentaries and works of a theological and ritual character; among his most influential writings are the Platonic Theology and his commentaries on the Timaeus, as well as the Hypotyposis, on astronomical theories, and a commentary on the first book of Euclid’s Elements. These texts preserved and reinterpreted the Platonic corpus, introducing religious elements such as a hierarchy of angels, ritual practices, and a mystical reading of the soul’s union with the One.
Proclus also played a decisive role in transmitting Neoplatonic ideas to the late Christian milieu through engagement with authors such as Pseudo‑Dionysius, contributing to the formation of Christian mystical currents. His intellectual legacy influenced philosophy, theology, and the history of mathematics, and he remains a reference for scholars of late antiquity and Neoplatonism.
