Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa was a prominent Soviet physicist, internationally recognized for his contributions to low-temperature physics. Trained at the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute, he worked for many years at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge with Ernest Rutherford before returning to the Soviet Union, where he founded and directed laboratories dedicated to the study of liquid helium and superfluid phenomena. In the 1930s he developed original apparatus to liquefy large quantities of helium and introduced industrial techniques for air liquefaction that were applied during World War II. His research on the absence of viscosity in cooled helium-4 led to the discovery and description of superfluidity, work that earned him the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventions and discoveries fundamental to low-temperature physics. Beyond his experimental achievements, Kapitsa played a significant institutional and political role: he helped create the Institute for Physical Problems, participated in the founding of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and acted as an influential advocate for the scientific community before the Soviet government. He received numerous national and international honors and left a technical and conceptual legacy that remains present in solid-state physics and industrial applications.
