Maria Theresa Henriette Dorothea was a princess of the Austria-Este line who, by marrying Ludwig III, became queen consort of Bavaria from 1913 until the royal abdication in 1918. Born into the imperial family, she was the daughter of Archduke Ferdinand Charles and Archduchess Elisabeth Francisca, and maintained close ties with the houses of Modena, Savoy and Tuscany, which shaped her dynastic role in central Europe. She married in 1869 and had thirteen children, through whom she became connected to several European royal and noble houses. Her position as the first Catholic consort of Bavaria since the kingdom’s elevation in 1806 gave symbolic significance to Ludwig III’s reign. During the First World War she presented a patriotic profile: she organized official events, mobilized relief efforts for the troops and supported the Austrian monarchy. In 1875 she was also recognized by Jacobites as a claimant to the ancient British thrones, a pretension inherited from Modena. After Germany’s defeat and the revolutions of 1918 the royal family was forced into exile; Maria Theresa died in 1919 in southern Bavaria and her remains were transferred to the Royal Crypt of Munich Cathedral in 1921.
