Louise of Great Britain was queen consort of Denmark and Norway from 1746 to 1751 as the first wife of Frederick V. Born a British princess, the youngest daughter of George II and Queen Caroline, she came to the Danish court in a dynastic marriage negotiated to strengthen the alliance between Great Britain and Denmark–Norway.
Though the union was political, Louise and Frederick lived together fairly harmoniously in the early years. Popular with the people of Copenhagen, the queen was noted for her friendly manner, for learning the Danish language, and for encouraging theater and music at court, helping create a more festive and less formal atmosphere than that of the previous generation.
In her short time as queen, Louise’s role was largely ceremonial: she did not exert significant political influence but left a cultural legacy by reshaping the center of court life and by promoting her children’s language education. She died in 1751, still young, remembered for her warmth and for bringing a more relaxed tone to the Danish monarchy.
