Catherine Henrietta of Braganza was a Portuguese princess who became queen consort of England, Scotland and Ireland by marrying Charles II, a role she held from 1662 to 1685. A daughter of D. João IV, the first king of the House of Braganza, she brought to the English court cultural traits and food habits historically attributed to her, such as orange marmalade, the custom of drinking tea, and a wider use of cutlery and tobacco. As a Catholic, she lived in a delicate position in a predominantly Anglican England: she was not crowned and suffered political attacks and accusations connected to the religious conspiracies of the period, and she produced no offspring. Her marriage was also an important diplomatic instrument, aligning Portuguese and English interests and securing strategic and commercial benefits for both kingdoms. After the death of Charles II and the Glorious Revolution, she returned to Portugal, where she lived in the Bemposta Palace and even served as regent during the incapacity of her brother, King D. Pedro II. She died in 1705, leaving a cultural and symbolic legacy linked to exchanges between the Portuguese and English courts of the 17th century.
