Wilhelmina Charlotte Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach was Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland and Electress Consort of Hanover from 1727 until her death in 1737, as the wife of George II. Born in the small principality of Brandenburg-Ansbach, she lost her parents early and was raised at the Prussian court of Frederick I and Sophia Charlotte, where she received an extensive education and absorbed Enlightenment ideals that shaped her public conduct. She married George Augustus, heir of Hanover, and moved to Britain in 1714, becoming Princess of Wales. Known for a lively personality and keen intellect, she played an active political role: she supported the opposition to King George I, cooperated with Robert Walpole, and continued to exert influence during her husband's reign. As queen she acted as regent when George II was in Hanover and helped to consolidate the Hanoverian dynasty during a period of political instability. Her strained relationship with her eldest son, Frederick, is notable; her death in 1737 was widely mourned and had a lasting effect on the court and public perception of the monarchy.
