Maria Teresa Francisca Josefa Joana Benedita of Austria–Tuscany was an archduchess of the House of Habsburg–Lorraine and, by marriage, queen consort of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Daughter of Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany and Princess Louise of Naples and Tuscany, she was born during the tumult of the Napoleonic Wars, when the family was exiled in Vienna. She was named in honor of Empress Maria Theresa, her great-grandmother. In 1817 she married Charles Albert of Savoy, then Prince of Carignano; the union reinforced dynastic ties between the Habsburgs and the House of Savoy. She became Princess of Carignano and, with her husband's accession to the throne in 1831, served as queen consort of Sardinia, a role she carried out through decades of political change on the Italian Peninsula. Maria Teresa was known for her conservative Catholic convictions and for exerting influence, especially over her eldest son when he took on governmental responsibilities. After Charles Albert's death in 1849 she withdrew from public life and returned to Italy in 1851, dying in 1855. She was buried in the Basilica of Superga in Turin, leaving a legacy tied to dynastic activity and a conservative presence at the Sardinian court.
