Queen Consort of Spain Bárbara

Photo: Reproduction

Maria Madalena Bárbara of Braganza was an infanta of Portugal and Queen Consort of Spain as the wife of Ferdinand VI, serving in that role from 1746 until her death in 1758. A daughter of King John V and Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria, she belonged to a dynastic context shaped by political alliances between the Iberian courts. Bárbara’s marriage to the Prince of Asturias was arranged as part of a diplomatic agreement known as the “Exchange of the Princesses,” intended to strengthen ties between Portugal and Spain after the War of the Spanish Succession. Raised at a wealthy court, she received an erudite and musical education: she spoke several languages and studied with the harpsichordist Domenico Scarlatti, whose influence continued after she moved to Madrid. As a patron and lover of the fine arts, she contributed to the cultural life of the Spanish court. Her life was also affected by health issues and contemporary perceptions of her physical appearance, factors that influenced how the marriage was received both publicly and privately. Overall, Maria Bárbara is associated with the dynastic diplomacy of the eighteenth century and with cultural patronage at the Iberian courts.
