Queen Consort of Spain Maria Isabel

Photo: Reproduction

Maria Isabel of Braganza (1797–1818) was an Infanta of Portugal and, by marriage, queen consort of Spain from 1816 to 1818. Daughter of D. João VI and Carlota Joaquina, she was noted for a refined education and a calm temperament, which contrasted with the political ambitions of some members of her family. Her union with Ferdinand VII had dynastic and political motivations and, despite an initially hostile popular reception, was characterized by a friendly personal relationship between the spouses. As a patron and promoter of the arts, Maria Isabel was the main originator of the group that would give rise to the Prado Museum. Inspired by visits to El Escorial and by suggestions from Francisco Goya, she worked to gather dispersed works from the royal collection and to save them from neglect after the Peninsular War, contributing to the formation of the inaugural gallery. Her life and queenship were tragically shortened by complications in childbirth, an episode that entered the historical record for its dramatic circumstances. Buried at El Escorial, her brief role as a patron of the arts left a lasting legacy in the preservation and display of Spain’s pictorial heritage.
