Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath whose work spans poetry, prose, music, theatre and visual arts. Internationally known for Gitanjali (Lyric Offerings), he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, becoming the first non-European writer to be so honored. His work renewed Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combining lyricism, colloquial speech and contemplation.
As a composer he wrote roughly two thousand songs in the style known as rabindra-sangita, which incorporated elements of Hindustani classical music and Bengal’s folk traditions. His novels and short stories — among them Gora and Ghare-Baire — address personal and political themes, and his language decisively influenced Bengali literary culture.
Tagore was also an educator and institution-builder: he founded a school at Santiniketan that developed into Visva-Bharati University, promoting dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures. A central figure of the Bengal Renaissance, he left a lasting legacy in the literature, music and cultural institutions of India and Bangladesh — including the national anthems of both countries.
