Rahsaan Roland Kirk (born Ronald Theodore Kirk) was an American multi-instrumentalist whose work profoundly influenced jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. Blind from childhood, he was noted for the rare ability to play two or three wind instruments at once — including tenor, manzello, and stritch — and for developing unconventional techniques such as circular breathing and singing while playing the flute. These innovations widened the expressive range of saxophone and flute in jazz.
His music moved between soul jazz and hard bop while drawing on elements from ragtime to free jazz, along with influences from classical music and pop. Renowned for theatrical, politically pointed performances, Kirk also appeared as a sideman on recordings by other notable artists, such as Quincy Jones on "Soul Bossa Nova," and maintained important collaborations with figures like Charles Mingus and Roy Haynes.
Well known for modifying and collecting instruments — including creating his own arrangements to play chords with multiple wind instruments — he left both technical and aesthetic legacies: later flutists and saxophonists adopted his techniques and approaches. Even after a stroke in 1975 that limited his mobility, he continued adapting his instruments and performing until his death in 1977. His discography and live performances remain reference points for jazz players and scholars.
