Caroline Matilda was a British princess who became queen consort of Denmark and Norway when she married Christian VII in 1766. The youngest daughter of Prince Frederick, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn (Prince Frederick of Wales), she was described as natural, energetic, and attractive, with a fondness for the outdoors, music, and riding. At court, her candid manner and unconventional behavior aroused suspicion among the Danish nobility. The marriage proved unhappy: the king suffered from mental disturbances and emotional distance, while Caroline found support and later a passionate relationship with Johann Friedrich Struensee, a physician who quickly gained political influence. From 1770, Struensee exercised effective power in the king’s name, implementing extensive reforms and increasing the queen’s public visibility. Her relationship with Struensee and the government changes provoked a strong conservative reaction; the birth of her youngest daughter fueled scandals about paternity. Politically isolated after the fall of Struensee’s circle, Caroline Matilda remained a controversial figure whose brief role at court marked a turbulent period for the Danish monarchy at the end of the eighteenth century.
