Christina of Sweden (1626–1689) was queen from 1632 to 1654 and a striking figure of seventeenth‑century Europe. Heir to Gustavus II Adolphus, she ascended the throne as a child and grew up under the regency of Axel Oxenstierna, receiving a humanist, multilingual education that made her a voracious reader and a cultivated intellectual.
During her reign she pursued cultural and political ambitions, seeking to transform Stockholm into the “Athens of the North.” Known for her interest in manuscripts, science, alchemy and theatre, Christina promoted scholarship and adopted a lifestyle unusual for a monarch of her time.
In 1654 she abdicated in favor of her cousin Charles X Gustav and converted to Catholicism, a decision that sparked scandal in Protestant Sweden and prompted her departure for Italy. Settled in Rome, she became a patron of the arts, supporting musicians, playwrights and cultural projects until her death.
Christina’s memory endures both for her political role — the unexpected abdication and religious break — and for her cultural legacy: a figure who challenged gender norms and became an icon for literary, theatrical and musical works.
