Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden was titular queen from 1718 to 1720 and, after abdicating, served as queen consort until 1741. The youngest daughter of Charles XI, she succeeded after the death of her brother Charles XII, claiming the crown despite a dynastic preference for the son of her eldest sister; her confirmation by the Riksdag was conditional on renouncing the absolutist powers she had inherited from her father. She married Frederick of Hesse‑Kassel in 1715, a union with strong political overtones: her husband and his supporters sought to consolidate influence over the succession while Ulrika Eleonora played a central role in court negotiations. Before this she had lived in the shadow of more prominent siblings but took on public responsibilities during her brother’s absence in the Great Northern War, even serving in regency functions. Her reign, defined by a political transition, reflected the parliament’s pushback against absolute monarchy and paved the way for a new balance between the Crown and the Riksdag. Known for a discreet manner, musical skill and reserved character, she left a legacy associated with the weakening of Swedish absolutism and the increased centrality of the parliament in succession matters.
