Maria I of Braganza was Queen of Portugal and the Algarves (1777–1815) and, after the creation of the United Kingdom, Queen of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves (1815–1816). The first female monarch to rule Portugal in her own right, her reign was shaped by both external and internal pressures: the decline in Brazilian gold revenues, the reverberations of American independence, and the shocks of the French Revolution. Her early rule was marked by the dismissal of the Marquis of Pombal and by a program of reforms and institutional consolidation, including the founding of the Royal Academy of Sciences, the Royal Library and Lisbon’s Casa Pia.

Dona Maria cultivated a devout, pious image that informed public acts and helped shape her persona as the “mother of the realm.” She sponsored scientific missions and trade agreements, such as the treaty with Prussia (1789), and remained active in diplomacy and administration until her mental health deteriorated. In 1792, for health reasons, government functions were exercised by her son João, who assumed the regency.

The decisive episode of her reign was the royal family’s transfer to Brazil in 1807–1808 in response to the Napoleonic invasions, which moved the empire’s political center to Rio de Janeiro. Though weakened, Maria I continued to serve as a dynastic symbol during this period, leaving institutional and cultural legacies that influenced the organization of the overseas territory.
