Raj Kapoor was one of the central figures of 20th-century Hindi cinema, working as an actor, director and producer. As the founder of R. K. Films, he established himself as a star and a maker of both popular and personal films, with productions that influenced the industry through narrative, visual and musical innovations. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin, he created characters with traits of the poetic bungler, most notably in Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955) and Mera Naam Joker (1970), works that combined melody, social critique and melodrama. Awaara, besides being a domestic success, achieved international recognition and his performance in it has been cited among the greatest in world cinema by international publications. His films crossed borders, enjoying commercial success across parts of Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Africa and the Soviet bloc, which broadened his cultural influence. Institutionally, he received major Indian honors, including the Padma Bhushan (1971) and, posthumously, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1988), acknowledging his artistic legacy and lasting contribution to Indian cinema.
