Ralph Nader is an American lawyer and political activist known for his central role in consumer protection, environmental advocacy, and government reform. He became a public figure after the book Unsafe at Any Speed (1965), which exposed safety defects in the auto industry and played a decisive part in the passage of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (1966). The book also produced legal and political repercussions by exposing automakers’ practices.

In the decades that followed, Nader founded and promoted watchdog and public-interest organizations such as the Center for Auto Safety and Public Citizen, and he inspired the movement known as “Nader’s Raiders,” made up of students and volunteers who investigated federal agencies and regulatory standards. His work ranged from vehicle safety to pesticides, nuclear safety, and consumer rights.

A presidential candidate on several occasions, he ran as an alternative to the two-party system to highlight undercovered issues and the need for electoral reform. Author of more than two dozen books and cited among the most influential Americans, his legacy lies in institutionalizing oversight practices, strengthening consumer protections, and building public-interest organizations in the United States.
