Ramón Menéndez Pidal was one of Spain’s leading philologists and historians, a key figure for the study of medieval Hispano-Iberian language and literature. Appointed Professor of Romance Philology at the University of Madrid in 1899, he directed the Centro de Estudios Históricos and founded the Revista de Filología Española—institutions that trained generations of researchers and established a Spanish school of philology. His research on the Romancero and medieval epic—in works such as his study of the Infantes de Lara and his edition of the Cantar de Mio Cid—supported the thesis of the songs of heroic deeds as orally transmitted, anonymous, and fragmentary, and made possible reconstructions of the historical grammar of Castilian. Also active in cultural and educational initiatives, he served as president of the Residencia de Estudiantes and was associated with the Institución Libre de Enseñanza. During the Civil War he lived in exile and taught in the United States; on his return he retained institutional influence, eventually directing the Real Academia Española. His academic legacy includes manuals of historical grammar, critical editions, and a generation of disciples who spread the study of the Spanish language in Spain and Latin America.
