Ramsey Clark was an American lawyer and public official, active mainly in the 1960s and 1970s. The son of a jurist who served on the Supreme Court, Clark held leadership positions in the Department of Justice during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, serving as Assistant Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General before being appointed Attorney General of the United States (1967–1969). As a cabinet member, he became known for vigorous support of civil liberties and civil rights: he oversaw the federal response to school integration crises, the protection of the Selma marches, and the work that led to the drafting and implementation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968. He also opposed the death penalty and strengthened enforcement of antitrust laws. After leaving office, he remained publicly active as a law professor and progressive activist, taking part in campaigns against the Vietnam War and later providing counsel and defense to controversial international figures. His career is remembered for its commitment to civil rights and for his shift from high-ranking public official to a dissenting voice on global issues.
