Ernest Loring “Red” Nichols was an American cornetist, composer, and bandleader whose career spanned the traditional jazz styles of the 1920s through the postwar era. A musical prodigy, he became known as a New York studio musician, appearing on numerous sessions and leading groups often billed as Red Nichols and His Five Pennies — an ironic name that came to identify ensembles of refined sound focused on the collective improvisation of dixieland. In the late 1920s his recordings were praised for their harmonic conception and balanced execution, and were cited as among the most progressive moments in the jazz of the period. He worked with prominent performers of the time and counted collaborators such as Miff Mole, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Gene Krupa. Despite changing tastes with the rise of swing, Nichols remained active: he led orchestras, appeared in films, and served as a cultural ambassador on European tours. His career was also marked by personal interruptions and involvement in wartime efforts. The film The Five Pennies (1959), inspired by his life, helped revive awareness of his contribution to jazz.
