Frederick V (1596–1632) was Elector Palatine of the Rhine and, for a very brief period, King of Bohemia, a central figure in the political and religious tensions that precipitated the Thirty Years’ War. Raised a Calvinist, he inherited the electoral dignity and the leadership of the Protestant Union in 1610, defending the interests of the Protestant states against the expanding power of the Habsburgs. His marriage to Elizabeth, daughter of James I of England, strengthened ties with Europe’s Protestant courts.
In 1619 he accepted the Bohemian crown offered by rebels opposed to the Catholic Emperor Ferdinand II, a gamble intended to check imperial hegemony. The lack of international support and his defeat at the Battle of White Mountain (1620) forced him into flight and earned him the nickname “the Winter King.” The outcome was the loss of the Upper Palatinate and, in 1623, the transfer of the electoral dignity to Bavaria.
Exiled in The Hague, Frederick spent his remaining years seeking to recover his domains; he allied with the Swedish intervention of 1631–1632, but the death of Gustavus Adolphus and the belated support of his allies thwarted any restoration. He died in 1632, leaving a contested legacy: sometimes regarded as a Protestant martyr, sometimes blamed for decisions that widened a long European conflict.
