Christian IV was King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Holstein and Schleswig, ruling from 1588 to 1648—the longest reign in Scandinavian history. A member of the House of Oldenburg, he took personal control of government in 1596 and became known for his reforming ambition: he carried out extensive urban and military works, modernized the navy and promoted construction of fortifications with Dutch engineers. He founded market towns, supported manufactories and promoted commerce in line with the mercantilist ideas then prevailing. His reign brought periods of stability and relative prosperity, but also embroiled the monarchy in wars. Christian IV took an active part in the European conflicts, most decisively in the Thirty Years’ War, which weakened the Danish economy and led to the loss of some territorial gains. He was also responsible for overseas initiatives, including expeditions to the North Atlantic and Greenland, and for sponsoring voyages to Canada. Culturally he left an architectural legacy in the Dutch Renaissance style and reshaped cities, notably rebuilding and renaming Oslo as Christiania. A charismatic and controversial figure, he is remembered both for ambitious modernization efforts and international prestige and for the military costs that marked the decline of his power.
