Christian VI was king of Denmark and Norway from 1730 to 1746, known for his authoritarian rule and the intense pietist religiosity that shaped his administration. A son of Frederick IV, he became known for avoiding military conflicts and for pursuing a cautious foreign policy, including the Treaty of San Ildefonso (1742) with Spain, intended to regulate trade and navigation between the two kingdoms.
Domestically, his public image was associated with the court’s austerity and moral conservatism, where religious observance and social reserve predominated. One of the most controversial measures of his reign was the stavnsbånd (1733), which bound peasants to their native regions and reinforced their subordination to noble and military authority — a policy that damaged his reputation and would only be reversed decades later.
At the same time, Christian VI was a notable patron of construction: he commissioned major palaces and representative buildings such as Christiansborg and the Eremitage, projects meant to assert dynastic prestige though they strained public finances. His legacy remains ambiguous: a reformer and builder, but also a symbol of religious absolutism and the period’s social repression.
