Frederick IV was king of Denmark and Norway from 1699 to 1730. The son of Christian V, he became known as an active and energetic monarch, noted for his ability to rule with relative independence from his ministers. He sponsored the arts and architecture, influenced by travels to Italy, and commissioned palaces such as Frederiksberg and Fredensborg in the Italian baroque style. His reign was marked by participation in the Great Northern War (1700–1721) against Sweden. Despite military setbacks, such as the defeat at Helsingborg, Frederick achieved successes in Germany — including operations against Swedish Pomerania and the capture of Wismar — and strengthened Danish influence in Schleswig–Holstein by weakening the pro‑Swedish faction of the duke of Holstein‑Gottorp. Domestically, the postwar period brought economic recovery and cultural vitality: the first public theatre emerged and figures such as Ludvig Holberg rose to prominence. He also faced disasters like the plague of 1711 and the great fire of 1728 in Copenhagen. In his later years he adopted pietistic practices; he died in 1730 and was buried in Roskilde Cathedral.
