Frederick V was King of Denmark and Norway from 1746 to 1766, a member of the House of Oldenburg. The son of Christian VI and Sophie Magdalene, his personality contrasted with his parents’ pietism: while he grew up drawn to worldly pleasures and courtly life, his reign was characterized by political stability and economic progress led by capable ministers such as A. G. Moltke, J. H. E. Bernstorff, and H. C. Schimmelmann.

During his rule Denmark remained neutral in the major European wars of the period, including the Seven Years’ War, and promoted industrial and commercial development—most notably ventures such as the ironworks and foundry at Frederiksværk. In the social sphere he supported public initiatives such as a hospital and an orphanage in Christianshavn, and in 1753 he founded the first state lottery, which still exists.

Frederick also encouraged the arts and sciences: he reopened the theatre at Kongens Nytorv, patronized the Royal Academy of Arts, and allowed greater cultural freedom after his father’s period of religious severity. His private life, marked by marriage and extramarital affairs, drew contemporary attention, but his public legacy remains tied to administrative modernization and the cultural climate of the mid-18th century.
