Edward IV of England, born Edward of York, was the first English monarch of the House of York and a central figure in the most active phase of the Wars of the Roses. The son of the Duke of York, he distinguished himself early as a military and political leader, taking part in decisive battles against the House of Lancaster and assuming the throne in 1461, with an interruption between 1470 and 1471 in which he lost and then regained power. Edward’s reign combined military skill with political acumen: he won the Battle of Tewkesbury and restored a degree of internal stability, but he faced ongoing intrigues and rivalries, notably with the influential Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick. His decision to marry secretly to Elizabeth Woodville had a strong dynastic and political impact, weakening traditional alliances and fueling court dissension. Shaped by a context of economic crisis and England’s military decline, Edward consolidated Yorkist authority and established foundations that influenced the balance of power in late medieval England. His reign left a mixed legacy: a temporary restoration of order alongside tensions that would lead to renewed dynastic conflict after his death.
