Henry III was King of England, Lord of Ireland and Duke of Aquitaine from 1216 to 1272. He ascended the throne as a child during the First Barons’ War, and his early reign was dominated by regents such as William Marshal and Hubert de Burgh. Known for his piety and religious devotion, he sponsored grand ceremonies and funded building works and donations to the Church, showing particular veneration for Edward the Confessor.
Over the course of his long reign he made unsuccessful attempts to recover Angevin territories in France, suffering notable military defeats such as at Taillebourg and failing in the 1230 campaign. His costly foreign policies and the influence of his Poitevin half-brothers provoked noble discontent, which culminated in the reforms of the Provisions of Oxford (1258) and the outbreak of the Second Barons’ War led by Simon de Montfort.
Although captured at Lewes (1264), Henry regained the throne after his son Edward’s victory at Evesham (1265). He rebuilt Westminster Abbey and left a mixed legacy: dynastic stability and monumental building, but also political tensions and harsh measures against the Jewish community. His 56-year reign was, at the time, the longest in the English monarchy.
