Henry IV of England, known as Henry Bolingbroke, was the first king of the House of Lancaster, reigning from 1399 to 1413. The son of John of Gaunt and grandson of Edward III, he was a powerful noble before his coronation, accumulating titles and influence in medieval England through family alliances and territorial inheritances from the Lancasters. His rise to the throne came after his return from exile in 1399, when he took advantage of the waning support for his cousin Richard II and secured the crown amid a context of internal political conflict. The early years of his reign were marked by internal rebellions and frequent clashes with Parliament, reflecting the fragility of royal authority and the complex relationship between the crown and the nobility at the end of the 14th century. Henry faced military and political challenges, including uprisings in Wales, and established the Lancaster dynasty, which would remain central to English politics in the following decades. His life also left a literary legacy: it provided the basis for William Shakespeare’s history plays about Henry IV. He was succeeded by his son Henry V, who furthered the family’s military and political prominence.
