Charles IX (1550–1611) was King of Sweden from 1604 to 1611, after a long period as Duke of Södermanland and as regent of the realm. A member of the Vasa dynasty, he worked to consolidate royal authority in place of King Sigismund and took harsh measures against his opponents, actions that defined his reign and made him a central figure in the dynastic struggles of the late sixteenth century. As monarch, Charles promoted the economy and internal colonization: he encouraged mining, trade and the settlement of forested areas such as Värmland, and founded towns including Filipstad and Mariestad. He also sought to assert Sweden’s presence on the North Sea by sponsoring the establishment of a new settlement at Gothenburg, planned with Dutch settlers. His legislative policy was strict and influenced by religious precepts; in 1608 he introduced a severe penal code inspired by the Old Testament that prescribed extreme punishments for crimes such as adultery, witchcraft and other conduct deemed gravely immoral. Charles IX died in 1611 and was succeeded by his son Gustav II Adolf, under whose reign Sweden would assume an imperial role in Europe.
