Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte, known in Sweden as Carl XIV Johan, was a central figure in the political and military transformations of Napoleonic Europe and northern Europe in the early 19th century. A career soldier, he rose through the ranks during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars to become a Marshal of France, taking part in decisive campaigns such as Austerlitz and the 1813–1814 campaign. His military career established his reputation for leadership and strategic skill. He surprised Swedish politics when he was elected heir to the Swedish throne in 1810, adopting the name Carl Johan and becoming regent and commander‑in‑chief of the Swedish forces before formally assuming the crown. As prince regent, he helped forge the alliance between Russia and the United Kingdom within the Sixth Coalition and was a key figure in the Trachenberg Plan that contributed to Napoleon’s defeat. After the war he led the campaign that resulted in the cession of Norway to Sweden and, in 1818, ascended the throne as the first monarch of the House of Bernadotte. His reign was marked by a long period of peace and internal stability, and he left a dynastic legacy that maintained the personal union between Sweden and Norway until 1905.
