Frederick I (Fredrik I) was King of Sweden from 1720 to 1751 and Landgrave of Hesse‑Kassel from 1730. A member of the House of Hesse‑Kassel, he had a prominent military career in early 18th‑century European wars, commanding Hessian troops and taking part in battles such as Blenheim and Malplaquet. He married Princess Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden, becoming the only Swedish prince consort before being elected monarch after her abdication. His coronation opened the era known as the “Age of Liberty” in Sweden: he inherited a kingdom weakened by the Great Northern War and by territorial losses to Russia under the Treaty of Nystad (1721). Initially active, he soon withdrew from state affairs, ceding influence to the aristocracy and parliamentary factions; he began delegating official acts and devoting himself to hunting and private relationships. Among his public acts were the founding of the three Swedish royal orders (the Seraphim, the Sword, and the Polar Star) in 1748 and the prohibition of duels. His lack of political interest and the absence of legitimate heirs diminished his prestige and led to the replacement of the Swedish dynasty after his death.
