Philip of Habsburg, known as Philip the Handsome, was a prince and ruler of the House of Habsburg whose life linked the Low Countries, Burgundy and Spain. The son of Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, he inherited extensive domains in the Netherlands and the ducal title of Burgundy, and during his youth was involved in tensions between the Flemish cities and imperial authority. His marriage to Joanna of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, brought the Habsburgs into the Castilian throne: by right of his wife he became king consort of Castile and, after Isabella’s death, effectively assumed the regency as monarch. The union had long-lasting dynastic consequences, as his descendants helped consolidate the territorial unions that would become the empire of Charles V. He died suddenly in Burgos in 1506—officially of typhoid fever, although suspicions of poisoning circulated—and was buried in the Royal Chapel of Granada. Philip’s brief reign is remembered chiefly for the transfer of power between royal houses and the succession legacy that paved the way for Habsburg dominance in western Europe.
