Rei de Portugal Carlos I

Carlos I was King of Portugal and the Algarves from 1889 to 1908, remembered by the nickname “the Diplomat” because of the numerous relationships and visits among European courts that characterized his reign. He maintained an honorary military career and showed strong scientific interests, especially in oceanography, a field in which he distinguished himself personally and engaged with the intellectual circles of his time. His reign took place amid serious political and economic instability: the Rotativism system was showing signs of strain, worsened by financial crises, scandals, and colonial tensions—most notably the British Ultimatum of 1890, which weakened Portugal’s position in Africa and fueled republicanism. These circumstances led to episodes of violence and growing criticism of the monarchy. Despite domestic difficulties, Carlos I succeeded in positioning Portugal within European diplomacy at the turn of the century, receiving and making state visits by figures such as Edward VII and Wilhelm II. His reign ended tragically in 1908 when he was assassinated, an event that deeply affected the monarchy’s decline and boosted republican movements.
