King John II, nicknamed “the Perfect Prince,” was king of Portugal from 1481 to 1495 and is known for centralizing royal power and for his policy of overseas expansion. The son of Afonso V, he gradually took control of the kingdom, curbing noble influence and suppressing internal plots; episodes such as the fall of the Duke of Braganza and the assassination of the Duke of Viseu illustrate his determination to consolidate royal authority. In foreign affairs, John II prioritized maritime exploration in search of a route to the Indies, sponsoring and directing expeditions and exploratory missions, including initiatives that led Bartolomeu Dias and Pêro da Covilhã to open routes toward the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. That policy laid the groundwork for Portuguese expansion in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The death of his legitimate heir, the infant Afonso, and his failure to legitimize an illegitimate son left the king without a direct successor; in 1494 he negotiated the Treaty of Tordesillas with the Catholic Monarchs, dividing overseas zones of influence with Castile. He died in 1495, leaving a more centralized state and a clear direction for Portuguese navigation.
