John IV, nicknamed The Restorer, was King of Portugal and the Algarves from 1640 to 1656 and a central figure in the restoration of Portuguese independence from Spanish rule. A member of the ducal House of Braganza, where he served as the 8th Duke, he was chosen by the conspirators for his social standing, prestige and dynastic ties to the former royal family, serving as a symbol of national unity in the liberation effort.
His acclamation in December 1640 followed a carefully planned coup by nobles and burgesses dissatisfied with the Habsburg administration and the tax increases promoted by Olivares. Although some accounts suggest he was initially reluctant, John IV accepted the crown and led the political and military consolidation of the new dynasty, organizing resistance to Spanish attempts to reimpose control.
John IV’s reign established the House of Braganza as the new royal line and marked the start of a period in which Portuguese sovereignty was asserted within the seventeenth‑century European context. He is remembered as the monarch who reestablished national independence and as a central figure in the founding myth of the new dynasty.
