Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV, born Siaosi Tāufaʻāhau Tupoulahi, was King of Tonga from 1965 until 2006, succeeding his mother Salote Tupou III. Educated in Australia, where he studied law, he returned to Tonga to hold ministerial posts before assuming head of government as prime minister on behalf of the queen and later as sovereign. His long public life combined a traditional dynastic role with political influence in a parliament dominated by the nobility.
Known as much for his imposing stature and public presence as for other traits, Tāufaʻāhau cultivated a sporting image and was a religious lay preacher in his youth. During his reign he retained extensive control over state decisions, with his brother Fatafehi Tu'ipelehake serving for years as prime minister. In the 1990s and early 2000s he faced financial controversies that fueled calls for greater transparency and reform.
In the final years of his reign he led processes that helped open the way to the country’s gradual democratization, including the 2006 appointment of Feleti Sevele as the first prime minister who was not a member of the nobility. He died in 2006 at the age of 88 and received funerals that combined Christian rites and Polynesian customs, reflecting his central role in Tongan political and cultural life.
