Wilhelm II of Württemberg was the last king of the small Kingdom of Württemberg, ruling from 1891 until his abdication in 1918. Born into the royal family, he trained in law and served in the Prussian army, reaching the rank of field marshal during the First World War. His reign took place under the sway of the recently formed German Empire, which substantially curtailed monarchical powers. Known for modest habits and his closeness to the people of Stuttgart, Wilhelm was popular with his subjects and often walked the city without escort. His personal life was marked by tragedy: the early death of his only son and the death of his first wife shortly after childbirth; a second marriage produced no children, leading to the appointment of a collateral heir. After Germany’s defeat in the First World War and the German Revolution, he abdicated on 30 November 1918 and lived at Bebenhausen Castle with the title of duke. He died in 1921 and was buried in Stuttgart beside his first wife and his son.
