Ferdinand IV of Habsburg (1633–1654) was Archduke of Austria and the heir apparent to the Holy Roman Empire, holding the title King of the Romans from 1653. The eldest son of Ferdinand III, he nominally held the crowns of Bohemia (1646) and of Hungary and Croatia (1647), titles that reinforced the Habsburg dynasty’s position in Central Europe, although actual authority remained under his father’s regency because of his youth. A node in an extensive web of dynastic alliances, Ferdinand stood at the center of marriage strategies that linked the Austrian and Spanish branches of the House of Habsburg. His marriage was seen as crucial for the succession and for maintaining the balance among European powers; the proposed match with the Spanish infanta Maria Theresa carried significant geopolitical implications for the Iberian kingdoms and their overseas territories. His career unfolded during a time of profound change: the Peace of Westphalia (1648) reshaped the political order of the Holy Roman Empire and curtailed imperial authority vis-à-vis the territorial princes. Ferdinand died young of smallpox before he could succeed his father, and his premature death shifted the responsibility for succession to his brother Leopold, altering the course of the dynasty.
