Reinhold Andreas Messner is an Italian mountaineer, explorer, and author from the German-speaking province of South Tyrol. He became a central figure in modern alpinism by advocating and practicing the so-called “alpine style”: light, fast ascents with minimal support, in opposition to traditional long-siege expeditions. Messner amassed a series of pioneering achievements: he was the first to climb all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters — all without supplemental oxygen — and in 1978 he completed the first ascent of Everest without oxygen, repeating the feat in 1980 with the first solo ascent. He also completed the first unmechanized crossings of Antarctica and Greenland and crossed the Gobi Desert alone. Author of more than 80 books and featured in documentaries, Messner broadened his work to mountain conservation and education: he founded the Messner Mountain Museum and helped establish the organization Mountain Wilderness. From 1999 to 2004 he served in the European Parliament for the Italian Greens. His legacy combines technical achievements, promotion of lighter mountaineering practices, and cultural dissemination of mountain heritage.
