René Lacoste was one of France’s leading tennis players in the 1920s and 1930s and a member of the famed quartet known as “The Four Musketeers.” Known for his defensive game and tactical precision, he was a meticulous strategist: he kept notebooks on opponents and introduced strength training and systematic physical preparation, practices still uncommon at the time. As a player he won seven Grand Slam singles titles and was world No. 1 from 1926 to 1927.

After ending his career early because of health problems, Lacoste turned to entrepreneurship and technical innovation. In 1933 he founded the company that popularized the tennis polo shirt, stamped with the iconic crocodile—a brand that became synonymous with sporty elegance. In 1963 he patented a tubular steel racket that helped drive the switch from wooden frames to new materials, significantly influencing tennis equipment.

His legacy blends sporting achievements, advances in sports equipment, and the creation of a global brand that linked style with performance, preserving his name in tennis and in sports fashion.
