Richard Cromwell was an English statesman, known for serving as the second and last Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, succeeding his father Oliver Cromwell in 1658. Born into an influential family, he initially held local offices in Hampshire—such as justice of the peace and member of county committees—and occupied formal posts under the Protectorate, including Chancellor of the University of Oxford and member of the Council of State.

When he assumed the headship of government, Richard faced two central crises: political opposition from a Parliament dominated by Presbyterians and tolerated royalists, and the army’s distrust of his lack of military experience. His attempt to mediate between civilians and soldiers failed when military pressure forced his resignation about nine months later, paving the way for General George Monck’s intervention and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

After his fall, Richard withdrew into exile and lived quietly. He later returned to England, lived on the family estate, and died in his eighties without surviving descendants. His brief rule is remembered for the difficulty of reconciling civilian authority with military power during a period of intense political polarization.
