Richard Francis Burton was a prominent 19th-century British explorer, translator, diplomat and polymath whose work spanned geography, linguistics, ethnography and literature. Renowned for his mastery of dozens of languages and his frequent use of disguises, Burton undertook pioneering journeys in Africa and Asia, including an incursion into Mecca—forbidden to non-Muslims—and a stay in Harar, as well as the joint exploration with John Hanning Speke of the Great Lakes region and Lake Tanganyika. As a writer and translator, he produced influential renderings of Oriental works, including an unexpurgated translation of The Thousand and One Nights and erotic manuals such as the Kama Sutra, accompanied by extensive ethnographic notes that shocked Victorian audiences. His intellectual and liberal stance, combined with scholarly interests in sexuality and customs, provoked controversies and debate in England. In diplomatic service, Burton was posted as consul in several locations, among them Fernando Pó, Damascus, Santos and Trieste, the city where he died. His multifaceted career and the combination of scholarship, adventure and controversy left a lasting legacy in Oriental studies, ethnography and travel literature.
