Richard Becker was a German theoretical physicist whose work focused on thermodynamics, electrodynamics and the didactic formulation of theoretical physics. Author of influential books such as Theorie der Wärme and the series Theorie der Elektrizität, Becker integrated classical and quantum knowledge, offering systematic expositions on electromagnetic theory, the quantum theory of atoms and radiation, and the electrodynamics of matter. His compilations and reviews became references for students and researchers throughout the twentieth century.
In addition to his own output, Becker collaborated on editions and translations that broadened the reach of technical texts in physics, including English versions of works on electromagnetic fields and quantum interaction. The clarity and scope of his books helped establish courses in theoretical physics at German and foreign universities.
