Richard Kiley was an American actor and singer whose stage career was noted for its versatility and baritone voice. He became famous for originating the role of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha (1965), where he was the first to perform and record the classic “The Impossible Dream,” establishing himself as a central presence on Broadway. He won two Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical (Redhead, 1959; Man of La Mancha, 1966) and maintained a close association with the role by returning in revivals.

Beyond the theater, Kiley built a significant career in television and film: he received multiple Emmys and two Golden Globes for notable work in productions such as The Thorn Birds and A Year in the Life, and made guest appearances in series including Columbo and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His voice was in demand as a narrator for documentaries and films, including the ride narration for Jurassic Park both in the production and its film adaptation.

Regarded by critics as one of American theater’s most distinguished and versatile actors, he left a legacy through portrayals of leaders and complex characters as well as through his vocal presence in audiovisual works. Broadway even dimmed its lights in his honor after his death in 1999.
