Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick (1428–1471), was one of the most powerful English magnates of the fifteenth century, a prominent administrator, major landowner and military commander. A member of the influential House of Neville, he consolidated his power by marrying Anne Beauchamp, inheriting the earldom of Warwick and placing himself at the center of the political struggles that led to the Wars of the Roses. Initially an ally of the House of York, Warwick played a decisive role in deposing Henry VI and elevating Edward IV, and was known as the “Kingmaker” for his ability to influence succession. The author of significant military victories, he became for a time the king’s chief advisor, until the growing influence of the Woodvilles drove a wedge between them. In 1468–1470 his break with Edward led him to form an alliance with the Lancastrians; in 1470 he restored Henry VI to the throne, but the victory was short-lived. Defeated and killed at the Battle of Barnet in 1471, his fall marked a decisive turning point in the conflict, whose outcome restored Edward IV and reshaped the English political landscape. Warwick’s legacy remains tied to his role as a dynastic arbiter and to his lasting impact on the noble rivalries that shaped the English monarchy in the period.
