Richard Thompson is a British songwriter, singer and guitarist whose work spans folk and folk rock. A founding member of Fairport Convention in the late 1960s, Thompson early established himself as a writer and instrumentalist, helping shape British folk rock and influencing generations of musicians. His career includes a duo period with Linda Thompson and a long solo career characterized by prolific recording and touring.
Over more than four decades he has released dozens of albums, including critically recognized works such as Henry the Human Fly, Shoot Out the Lights (with Linda Thompson) and the repertory tribute 1000 Years of Popular Music. His versatility appears in both electric and acoustic recordings, in film soundtracks and in collaborations with a variety of artists and producers.
Regarded as one of rock’s great guitarists—appearing on prestigious lists—Thompson is also esteemed for the strength of his songs, many of which have been covered by artists such as Elvis Costello, Robert Plant and R.E.M. His legacy combines instrumental virtuosity, lyrical depth and lasting influence on the contemporary folk scene.
