Rita Levi‑Montalcini was an Italian physician and researcher whose career had a profound impact on twentieth‑century neurobiology. Internationally recognized for isolating nerve growth factor (NGF), her discovery—based on experiments with tumor tissue and chicken embryos—opened new avenues for understanding the mechanisms of development and regeneration of nerve cells and influenced research into neurodegenerative diseases.
For decades she split her work between laboratories in Italy and the United States, holding leadership positions in research centers and maintaining a prolific scientific output. In 1986 she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, an honor that affirmed her pioneering role in identifying substances that regulate neuronal growth.
Beyond her scientific work, she played a prominent public role: she was appointed a life senator of Italy and became a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Her life—shaped by political resistance, work under difficult conditions during the war, and persistent scholarship—established a legacy of scientific influence, the training of researchers, and encouragement of women’s participation in science.
Among awards, publications, and institutional posts, she is remembered both for her contributions to neuroscience and for a long career that spanned major scientific and social changes in the postwar era.
