Robert H. Bork was an American jurist, professor, and author whose career shaped legal and political debate in the twentieth century. A professor emeritus of law, he taught for long periods at institutions such as Yale and later George Mason, training generations of lawyers and influencing legal doctrine through scholarly and popular works. He became known as a spokesman for originalism—the view that judges should interpret the Constitution according to its original meaning—and as a critic of mid‑century Supreme Court decisions. In the federal government, he served as Solicitor General (1973–1977) and was a central figure in contentious episodes of the Watergate era, even serving briefly as Acting Attorney General in 1973. In 1982 he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a court influential in federal jurisprudence. His nomination to the Supreme Court in 1987 became one of the most contested in American history and was rejected by the Senate, an event that cemented his public notoriety. Author of books such as The Antitrust Paradox and Slouching Towards Gomorrah, Bork also left a mark in antitrust law—advocating a consumer‑welfare focus—and in cultural criticism, influencing academic and political debates for decades.
