Robert Burton was an English scholar and cleric whose principal literary and intellectual contribution is The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621), an encyclopedic and digressive work that became a pioneering landmark in the cultural and literary treatment of mental illness. Trained at Oxford, where he held administrative positions and served as librarian of Christ Church from 1624, Burton developed a wide-ranging erudition over his life, evident in the successive enlarged editions of his masterpiece, which reached more than half a million words in its final version. Born into a minor gentry family, Burton began his academic career early and also produced Latin poems and university plays, including the satire Philosophaster, which drew notable attention in the context of contemporary academic drama. His writing blended classical and contemporary references, serving both personal ends and a broader conversation about temperament, illness, and cure. The influence of The Anatomy of Melancholy extended for centuries: it was read, used and at times plagiarized by authors such as Laurence Sterne, and attracted distinguished readers — from Samuel Johnson to Samuel Beckett. After shifts in reception in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the work regained the interest of academic critics in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, securing Burton a lasting place in the canon of English humanities.
